Context

Hex is carved from a single block of basswood and exists as an ongoing study in precision, structure, and process. The piece forms a phase-shifted, interwoven hexagonal lattice carved entirely by hand, without templates or machines. Every cell is shaped by eye, with tolerances approaching 1/64″ across the structure.

The work began as a challenge — an attempt to create something visually complex and technically demanding, while testing the limits of manual accuracy. Hundreds of hours have been invested to date, and hundreds more remain. Rather than pursuing completion, Hex is intentionally left in a state of evolution, preserving the record of process as part of the work itself.

Intent

The intent behind Hex is to explore the limits of manual precision and mastery within a rigid geometric system. The hexagon — a recurring form in both natural systems and engineered structures — serves as the foundation for a complex lattice that blurs the boundary between pattern and structure.

The work is both meditative and obsessive, demanding sustained focus and control. Its unfinished state is deliberate, emphasizing process over finality and acknowledging that true precision is an asymptotic pursuit — something continually approached, never fully attained.

Rather than representing a finished object, Hex exists as an ongoing dialogue between discipline, constraint, and the pursuit of mastery.
